Changing your furnace filter is one of the simplest yet most important maintenance tasks for your HVAC system. A clean filter keeps your furnace running efficiently, improves air quality, and can even help reduce your energy bills. Here’s how to do it in just a few easy steps.
1. Turn Off the Furnace
Before you begin, turn off your furnace for safety. This prevents the system from turning on while you’re working.
2. Locate the Filter
The filter is usually located near the blower—either in the furnace cabinet or in the return air duct. Check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure where it is.
3. Remove the Old Filter
Slide the old filter out carefully. Take note of the direction of the airflow arrows printed on the frame. You’ll need to insert the new filter the same way.
4. Choose the Right Replacement
Filters come in various sizes and types. Match the size and MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) to your system’s needs. Higher MERV ratings catch more particles, but don’t go too high—too much resistance can strain your system.
5. Insert the New Filter
Insert the new filter with the arrows pointing in the direction of airflow (toward the furnace). Make sure it fits snugly.
6. Turn the Furnace Back On
Once the new filter is in place, turn your furnace back on and enjoy cleaner, more efficient heating.
Tip: Check your filter every 1–3 months and replace it as needed.
