Imagine.. a rainstorm comes through, and now you discover that your ceilings are stained with water leaking into your house from the roof. What could you have done to possibly prevent this?

It all starts with what kind of roofing you have, and how well it was put on. For example, if you have regular shingles, and you discover soft spots on top, you would know where the leak is coming from.

By doing preventive maintenance, i.e. replacing old shingles, repairing soft spots, would prevent the leak. However, if it wasn’t with the shingles, it could be with the underlying plywood or trusses, so inspecting these on a regular basis would lead to prevention of water damage to your house.

Also, by searching for leaks around exhaust pipes, chimneys if not sealed right, or any kind of plumbing could lead to more damage, so again, by doing preventive maintenance and repairing any potential spots, you can further protect your house from water damage.
