One thing that you will find in any home is a main water supply shutoff. This is a necessity, especially when a catastrophic leak causes gallons of water to spill out into your home. Are you aware of where yours is located? Most homeowners aren’t, and that could come back to bite them when they are in a situation where the water needs to be shut off, but they can’t figure out where to go to do so.
Oftentimes, you will be able to find your main water supply shutoff near your water heater, since that is where the water enters your home, but in some older homes, you might not find it inside of the home. Instead, there will be a hatch in your lawn where there is a shutoff valve. To operate that you will need a meter key, and if it isn’t located inside the hatch, it might be a good idea to get one and keep it at a place where you will be able to get it out quickly in an emergency.
