Even though you may not be the biggest fan of bats, bats play a very important part in the ecosystem. They play a role in pollination and seed dispersal, and they also eat a lot of mosquitoes. If you are interested in inviting bats into your backyard, you may want to install a bat house. Here are a few tips to help you to install one.
You can purchase a bat house, or it may be a fun project to build one yourself. There are free plans available online. Just make sure your bat house is at least 24 inches high and 16 inches wide. The bat house should also not contain any fabric or mesh. Bats really don’t prefer bat houses mounted on trees, due to the high risk of predation and because they are too shaded. They do prefer when bat houses are hung on buildings or other large wooden or concrete structures because that offers more of a consistent temperature, just make sure the spot gets at least six hours of sun exposure a day. There should also be a water source that is less than a quarter-mile away.
These few tips will help you to install your bat house, and hopefully, invite those bats into your backyard.
