A common feature that many older homes have is outdoor masonry work. It might be walls around your driveway, a beautiful porch or even a massive carport. If well maintained, it can be a great addition to your home, but since it is exposed to the elements, masonry work can fall apart quickly. The major culprit behind ruined masonry is water. Usually, your masonry will be protected by a coating that keeps water out of cracks, but when this wears off and water does make it in, those tiny cracks will expand as the water freezes and thaws. Keeping water away from your masonry work as much as possible is one way in which you can protect it. Grading around your home should be sloped away from the foundation so that water doesn’t pool up around it. It could also be worth it to re-apply a coating to the masonry for protection.
